I've read a number of reviews of the Aquastar 125 series of water heaters and they seem to break down to "love them" or "hate them".My local plumber won't install tankless water heaters anymore because his customers tend not to like them, apparently because they don't produce enough water flow in our cold water area to handle two hot water uses at once. But I've used the propane version of the 125B for eleven years without a hitch. The 125B is not intended for two hot water uses at once. For that get a bigger model or install two.The 125B probably also works best with low flow shower heads, at least in places with cold water, because the hot water flow can be fairly slow when the incoming water is quite cold.Since 2 gpm shower heads are standard nowadays, it shouldn't be a problem.

The only reason I needed a new 125B NG natural gas model was because I switched my house from propane to natural gas and the heaters can't be converted like a stove or furnace. So I decided to take a chance on this factory re-conditioned model.Although it now works fine, I had to fuss with it to get it there.Perhaps it was a fluke, but my heater turned out to have a loose gas fitting that caused a slow leak of about one cubic foot per hour.Once I figured out that it was leaking (with the slide gas valve off there should be NO gas flow at all through the gas meter) and found the loose fitting, all it took was an eighth of a turn of the nut with a twelve inch crescent wrench.Perhaps the gas line fitting came loose during shipping, I don't know. But it was easy to fix once I found the problem.

I made one other change to the heater having to do with the pilot. In retrospect I probably should have selected a pilotless model (125HX, I think), but I wanted one as similar to my old LP heater as possible so that it would be easy to install. However, the pilot flame on my 125B NG was large and audible and used much more gas than I preferred. This may be because I live at fairly high altitude (7700 feet) with much lower air pressure than at sea level. So, as an experiment, I replaced the pilot orifice in the new heater with the propane one from my old 125B LP heater, which has a much smaller hole (about the size of a pinprick).I didn't expect it to work, but it gave me a tiny pilot flame that uses just one cubic foot of gas per 7.6 hours (about $9 a year where I live).I found that I had to hold down the pilot flow button for about a minute, versus the usual fifteen seconds, to get the glow wire heated enough to keep the tiny pilot on.But it stays lit and works fine. This probably wouldn't work at sea level, but I'd recommend buying a propane orifice and trying to gradually enlarge the hole with a pin until one gets a small flame of the right size.No need to have a huge roaring pilot wasting gas, as was the case before I made the switch.

Other technical notes: on-demand water heaters require a substantial gas flow because of the high BTU burners. The 125B needs at least a 3/4 inch gas line, wider if it is a long run or several gas appliances will be running at the same time. Also, on-demand heaters require at least a five inch flue. The three inch flue used with tank water heaters is not sufficient. The 125B is not an appropriate model for warm input water, such as that from solar hot water panels. There are other models for that.
