We have this unit in our vacation home and it works flawlessly. If you are contemplating a tankless unit here are some things to consider.Buy the highest capacity BTU unit you can.199000 BTU's sound great, but if you live in a cold area, or even an area where the water is cool in the winter, 199000 BTU may be just enough to run an appliance and a shower. The reason is not the water heater, but the temperature of the inlet water. If you heat your water to 120 degrees, it takes twice the capacity if your inlet water is 40 rather than 80 degrees. You may also be aware that tankless units don't work too well with recirculating pumps unless you buy a very high end unit that is specifically designed for that application--this is why we don't have one in our everyday home. Also, the energy savings may be a bit misleading as all water heaters have a minimum efficiency of 75%.That being said, if you want a long shower, this unit is great!!!!

At home we have a high performance unit with a tank--think of a tankless with a built in tank.Ours is a Polaris (I give it five stars), but Vertex and Phoenix are other brands. We use this unit for our hot water and radiant floor heat.

The reason we went tankless at the other home is $3 per gallon propane and space. We were able to remove the old water heater, hang this unit on the wall and put a stacking washer/dryer in the space left by the old water heater. Now my wife is happy and I'm happy not having to spend $10 per month just keeping 40 gallons of water hot.$10 doesn't sound like much, but this unit will last 10+ years--that is a savings of more than $1200 over its lifetime!!

M-D Building Products 4663 R-6.7 Water Heater Insulation Blanket Review

M-D Building Products 4663 R-6.7 Water Heater Insulation Blanket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everybody knows what these things do, so I don't need to explain it.This is basically fiberglass insulation with a thin plastic sheet on one side. You wrap it around your water heater and in theory this will save energy.

Installation is messy. No way around that with the pink fiberglass. You'll have to cut and tape. on the top.My water heater is 80 gallons so none of them fit, I had to buy two kits.Even more messy, but if you've every done arts are crafts as a kid, you'll figure it out.It does include nice white tape that blends. You won't anything more than cursory instructions.

Here's what you'll need to keep in mind. Unless you water heater is about 40 years old, this product if you use it like you might think, won't save much money. These tanks are already insulated pretty well. How can you tell?put your hands on the tank.If it's warm, you'll benefit. If it's cold, you won't.

But I discovered there's a lot more to this. When feeling the tank, I realized most of the heat loss is on the top of the heater. So I made sure I extended the blank to the top and covered the top. You'll have to do a lot of cutting and taping to make that look neat.Once you do that, you'll realize the bulk of the heat loss is not in the tank itself, but the pipes leading out of the tank.

So after you put this in place, you'll need to go to the hardware store and buy the pre-manufactured pipe foam insulators. They go on pretty quickly.Insulate about 10 feet away on the hot side of the heater.

Does it save money?Well, I found it reduces the time you have to wait for hot water, so it's definitely doing some good.

Plan to spend about 1/2 hour doing this job, and wear clothes that you'll wash afterwards. That glass fiber is really messy.

Rheem RTG-84DVN Indoor Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater (Old Model RTG-66DVN) Review

Rheem RTG-84DVN Indoor Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second Rheem tankless water heater I've installed during my ongoing-home-renovation project (I now have one on each end of the house).
Some things to be aware of:
1)There is a lag for the tankless water heater to kick in and start hot water through the pipes (three seconds?).My kitchen sink is on the floor directly above the tankless water heater and I have to run over a gallon of water out before I get hot water. For that reason I am going to install under-the-sink, pass-through mini-tank (2.5 gallon) electric water heaters in the kitchen and bathrooms for instant hot water.
2)In both cases I've direct-vented horizontally, through a stud wall that is in front of a 12" concrete block wall. The main horizontal 3"/5" pipe that comes in the direct-vent kit is too short to go through about 17" of wall, so I had to buy a longer 3"/5" pipe (for an extra $100) from Rheem to get through the walls. You still need to buy the kit, though, for the elbow and outside termination pieces.
3)This is subjective, but it seems the water in the hot water pipe gets cold faster than it did with the tank water heater. With a tank water heater you could get hot water, then come back 20 minutes later and the water was still fairly warm right away. With the tankless water heater it seems the water gets colder faster, so you have to run that gallon of water through the pipes to get to the hot water again. In both cases the hot water pipes were insulated.
4)About once every two-three months the wired-in remote control displays an error number...it has been different every time. The first two times the error number wasn't listed in the documentation, so I called for telephone support. Now I just unplug the unit, wait 5-10 seconds, and plug it in again. It starts right up.
5)I can't be sure it was only the swapping out of the water heater, but my gas/electric bill has been, on average, a bit lower since replacing my old 40 gallon gas water heater.

Produces a very low flow of nice hot water. Definitely worth the money. Warranty is worthless though, it basically has no warranty as a portable unit it's sold as. Hopefully it lasts. One good long power outage and it pays for itself though.

Or for those who live in remote rustic cabins and homes with one bath. The intake air is pulled from all around the casing keeping the unit very cool to the touch. Factory-Reconditioned Powerstar Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater AE125 Review

Factory-Reconditioned Powerstar Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater AE125
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this water heater for our guest house. After major rewiring and plumbing changes and drywall repair from the rewiring and plumbing, we were finally ready to install. The installation went well and at first it seemed the system was working. However, after a short period of time, the water was not staying hot. It fluctuated in temperature when taking a shower and trying to do dishes in the kitchen sink, it actually went cold. We thought something was wrong so we called CPO (where we bought it) to see about getting this unit replaced, and they referred us to Bosch. After troubleshooting with Bosch on the phone, changing settings, water flow, etc., over a period of a few hours, we were not getting the improvement we had hoped for. To get hot water, the water pressure had to be turned so low that you could not reasonably expect to take a bath...it took forever to fill the tub. We continued to try different settings for a couple of days, but we had guests coming and needed hot water (which we had tried to explain to Bosch) so we went to the big orange store and bought an identical unit for $649. That one worked much better and proved to us that something was wrong with the first unit. Trying to return the unit to CPO, they required an incident number from Bosch. Called Bosch to get an incident number (why didn't we get one in the first place?) and had to call back several times due to long waits on the phone. They will not give an incident number unless they determine the unit is defective. If the board needs to be replaced, they will replace that, but will not give us an incident number to return the unit. So now we have a paper weight that cost $400. CPO will take it back, but not without charging a restocking fee and shipping. Why would we want them to restock this and sell it to someone else? Our only recourse at this time is to get back on the phone with Bosch and try to have them determine whether or not this item is defective. Never mind that they would have us go without hot water the whole time. This has been frustrating and expensive. Also, even though we have one that works, it is not really robust enough for a whole house water heater. Better as a point of service heater, but then you better make sure you have a big enough electrical service in your house to manage everything else you need to use. We have 200 amps, but if we needed two of these units, we'd have toupgrade our service in order to accommodate the huge amount of power these things need up front. Don't buy one of these unless they get the technology more stable.

InSinkErator SST-FLTR 2/3-Gallon Stainless Tank and Filtration System Review

InSinkErator SST-FLTR 2/3-Gallon Stainless Tank and Filtration System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
On InSinkErator's (ISE) recommendation, we bought this tank and filter to replace our 5 year old unit that still heated, but whose output was undrinkable - a funny taste due to corrosion of the tank (?). While the replacement tank and filter work fine, it was quite a job to install for this amateur plumber, due to ISE not providing good information or the right fittings. Our old unit used 1/4" copper from the faucet to the supply and to the tank. The new unit uses 3/8" polyethylene tubing. ISE should have known this, since we provided the serial number of the old unit when we called and had this unit recommended, hence only 3 stars. Gory details follow for anyone in the same situation.

The new tank is wider than the old one. So, I had to move the mounting bracket so the new tank did not interfere with the supply valve. When I called to explain the tubing mismatch, ISE sent an adapter for the line from the faucet to the tank (1/4" compression to quick-disconnect). However, the 3/8" to 1/4" Y adapter from the filter leaked when I tried it with 1/4" copper tubing. I ended up getting 2 1/4" to 3/8" compression adapters from Home Depot, which did fine with the copper 1/4" tubing and the plastic 3/8" tubing. Two are needed since the filter goes in between the supply and the faucet. Do-it-yourselfers will also need a compact tubing cutter and some extra 1/4" compression nuts and ferrules.

Factory-Reconditioned Aquastar (Hydro) Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater 1600H-NG Review

Factory-Reconditioned Aquastar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater 1600H-NG
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I selected the Bosch Aquastar 1600H for several reasons. It was the correct size for my 3 bed 1 bath ranch home where all of the plumbing is centrally located.I liked the fact that there was no standing pilot light OR plug for an igniter on the system. But the biggest selling point was that it used standard 4" Class B vent pipe for the flue. Most of the tankless water heaters that cost $900 to $2000 stab you in the pocket book again by using 3" stainless steel flue pipe that costs a fortune. In fact, a lot of them have optional kits that start around $300 for the basic pieces with you needing to buy additional pieces just to install you heater.
Now, the negative.First off, understand that I am a contractor by profession and that while installing this water heater was pretty straight forward; diagnosing issues with it is a whole different ball of wax. This was the first time that I had ever installed a tankless water heater and I was putting it in my own home. After changing my plumbing lines around, switching out the black pipe to ¾" for the gas line, running a new flue and hooking everything up, I was having problems getting it to function correctly.More specifically, the heater would not heat the water to a desired temperature and if the furnace or the stove/oven was running, the temperature would drop even more. After checking the manual and getting online to find out how to make a manometer ([...]), I found that the natural gas pressure was set incorrectly for my house. It was measuring around 5 WC (inches water column) and while it didn't really come out and say it, I found that this heater works best on at least 6 ½ WC.While the pressure was fine for my stove, the furnace and my old water heater, it just wasn't enough for this new water heater. The manual says to have the gas company come out to test and adjust the pressure, however, I just did it myself and set it to 7 ¼ WC.I will say that while this heater saves natural gas by not constantly heating the water in a tank, it does use A LOT more to heat your water when it is in demand.Another thing I found out, if installing this water heater in a climate where the temperature can drop below freezing, MAKE SURE that you install it in an area where there is good air flow with a decent ambient temperature. The reason being is that tankless water heaters like this Bosch Aquastar work on a capillary system to heat the water. If cold air comes down the flue, it can freeze the water in the heat exchanger and bust the pipes within it or just not function as your water line for your hot water will not flow.
However, after that, I will say that I have continuously enjoyed an endless supply of hot water. With two teenagers in the house, I can tell you that it used to be frustrating to have to wait an hour to take a shower if they had used the shower beforehand. This is the reason that I went with a tankless water heater to begin with.I also am happy to report that my gas bill was and has continued to be cut in HALF.I have been using this system for 7 months now and I can't wait to see my bills for the winter.

I use two of these (single 3/4" line split into both units, then back to single 3/4" line out) as I live in the northeast and have a family of 8.With all three showers (low flow heads), the clothes washer, dishwasher, and the kitchen sink (can't forget the kitchen sink!) going, I had hot water. The units are set to just below medium. My electric use dropped 30% from the 40gal electric unit I had that only gave us about 10 minutes of hot water and we couldn't use multiple showers at the same time.I have had these units since 7/06.I did not have to adjust the temp during the winter.I am very satisfied.

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 Plus Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 Plus Electric Tankless Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Note: The product image is not quite right as it shows another model than the 36.

I installed a Tempra 36 in a new application (not a replacement). It does everything it says it does and without taking up a huge space. It was easy to install and easy to use. The best part of this product is the endless hot water at a preset temperature.

You MUST review the flow rates and temperature rise charts to be sure it is adequate for your application. If you have colder water or want more water for your shower, the unit may only be able to keep up with one, not two or more people taking a shower at the same time. There are no electric units on the market that are as powerful as the propane ones, so make sure you've done your homework before installing.

The unit WILL draw its rated power (36kw) if you ask it to, so make sure you have enough power. It takes THREE 60 amp breaker PAIRS, which is a LOT of panel space. Check this also before installing.

In operation the thing works flawlessly and does exactly what it says in the manual. The one control, temperature set, is trivial to use. I figure the cost to run it is about $4.32/hr at our rate of about 12 cents/kwh. That's assuming of course you're running it at full draw. How can you beat that? Your own hot spring, virtually, for under $5/hr.

I think I'm in for years of trouble free hot water.

This is for Jack Stecker.maybe you shouldn't be crushing all those pills buddy, I think it's negatively impacting your brain. This water heater is not intended to replace a tank water heater, it is not for your whole house.
If it is tripping your breaker, it is because you did not wire it correctly, or are using the wrong size breaker. The wire sizes that Bosch says to use are NOT intended as a guideline, they are the size that the unit needs. You are probably very lucky you didn't burn down your house.Next time follow the instructions, ALL of the instructions, and take the pills AFTER you are done with the wiring.I have two Bosch tankless water heaters, and they are awesome, but they need to be installed correctly. And yes, they do draw more electricity when they are on than a conventional tank water heater, it's just that they are only on when you need hot water.that draw is why you need to follow the directives about wire size. If it says 8ga wire, you CANNOT use 10ga.
Also, the size requirement for your house service needs to adhered to as well, if is says minimum 200 amp service, you cannot use it with a 150 amp service, you could burn your house down.
My advice, buy the 220v unit and have an electrician install it for you.

Bosch 1600H NG AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water Heater Review

EDIT - 1/11/08 -------------------------------------------------
I've been having trouble with the Aquastar lately. It still works but doesn't like to work when the furnance is running. I assumed the furnance was drawing down the gas pressure in the line but after having the gas company out and an HVAC technician they both concluded the pressure is steady and sufficient. Contacting Bosch technical support has proven to be an exercize in patience to say the least. Each phone call (there have been 3) has taken a minimum of 50 minutes on hold. I've spoken to three different techs and have been given three different solutions. First call, very nice lady, apolgized for the wait, I told her the problems and she sent me a new control box (didn't work). The second time I called, the tech told me it was my problem and not the Aquastar. He said I had insufficient gas pressure (I didn't), said I had a vent back draft (tested, I didn't) basically he blew me off. He gave me the phone number of a local tech (wasn't local-40 miles away) that I'd have to pay for (because it was my problem) to come and diagnose my Aquastar. I decided to call back because I was very unhappy with the technical support I had just received. My intent was to make a complaint, but on my third call I talked to yet another tech who diagnosed yet another possibility. He sent me another part to replace, which still hasn't solved the problem. Which is where I'm at at the moment.

I've done some more research on the internet and it seems that Bosch Hotwater tech support is reknown for poor service. Unfortunately that's something you only find out when the unit isn't working.

I'll have to change my recommendation from a buy to a don't buy at this point based solely on customer service. Hot water is not something you can readily do without for any period of time and if you do have a problem with the Aquastar, waiting days to have it fixed is not a solution.
Another curious observation, why is there such a wait for tech support? Must be a lot of broken Aquastars out there.

END EDIT ------------------------------------------------I installed the Aquastar 1600H myself in about 3 hours. I bought it at Lowes and like the other reviewer, had to go to HomeDepot to buy the 5" class B ducting. I gave the Lowes sales ppl an ear full about that but it just went in one ear and out the other.

If you're comfortable with sweeting copper and plumbing your own gas lines its really not that difficult. My biggest problem was positioning the unit so I could vent the exhaust gases. If you don't have a straight vent stack and have to feed the exhaust into the chimney like I did, it required placing the unit really low on the wall. You are required to vent straight up for the first 12" before you can elbow the vent. Along with the minimum run vs. rise of the vent pipe, it forced me to place the unit just barely a foot off the ground. Your situation may be different but keep it in mind. Also, it requires a minimum of 3/4" inside diameter black iron gas pipe. In some cases if you're tapping into the same gas line as your furnance, you may have to install 1" gas line. This unit requires a lot of BTU's and if you choke down below 3/4" it will not run properly. So that means no yellow flexible line to make the last connection. You'll have to hard plumb the iron pipe all the way to the unit.

There are both benifits and negatives to this unit. First the benifits. Long, long, long showers. Literally, you can take a shower all day. Then the next person in line doesn't have to wait for the water to heat back up. It's ready to go. Great for a family getting ready in the morning. Second, big savings on the gas bill. My bill dropped $20 the month after I installed this unit. I figure it will pay for itself in less than two years after the tax credit.

Now for the negatives. Low hot water pressure. That takes some getting used to. The unit has a maximum 4.3 gpm, but that's really unreasonable.(Take into consideration that I'm in the Northern USA and the water in coming into the house is at 50 degrees.) At that flow rate the water doesn't heat up above 90 degrees. That makes it warm not hot. You have to turn down the flow rate to 2.3 gpm to heat the water to 120 degrees. At that flow rate / pressure, if you open two hot water spigots anywhere in the house at the same time it becomes a trickle. There is no way you could run the shower or any other appliance like the dishwasher or washing machine at the same time. If you turn the Aquastar back up to 4.3 gpm you could, but you'll be taking a warm shower not hot (in my case).
Also, at 2.3 gpm, it takes a long time for the hot water to actually get to the faucet. It probably takes 4 to 5 times longer than it used to for hot water to flow from the tap than it did with the old tank system. For example, if I'm washing my hands, by the time I'm done lathering up and rinsing, the water is just now starting to get hot. I've come to realize its not even worth turning the hot water on for short burst of hot water like that.
It takes adaptation to get use to this, like this trick I use in the morning. I turn the hot water on and brush my teeth while the water is slowly making it's way to the tap. Once it's hot, then I turn on the shower. Otherwise I have to let the shower flow for what seems like a very long time before it starts getting up to temperature.

Would I recommend this unit. It depends. If you really need the ability to run two showers or two appliances at the same time, then no way. You'll have to go with the next unit up that has a faster flow rate. There's no way this unit can handle that.

But if you think you can adapt to the low flow rate and really enjoy taking all day hot showers while saving money on your gas bill then this is the unit for you. I really enjoy the savings and long showers.

One more thing. The manual says you have to clean the unit once a year to maintain its efficiency. That means disassembling some parts in the unit. Clean them and put it back together. I haven't had to do this yet, but its just one more thing to consider before you switch to tankless hot water.

I have to eat this one because Crogan will not accept a return, which by the way, I could not find anywhere in writing. For that reason alone I would not purchase any product from this supplier. I had very realistic expectations for this little heater. All I wanted was warm water to wash my hands and face in a small sink. Even with the low flow aerator this product was unacceptable and I immediately removed it. Please note that the owner of Crogan has put in a review--which is not true.

Intermatic WH21 Electric Water Heater Timer Review

Intermatic WH21 Electric Water Heater Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is easy to install if you know what you are doing.
You should have some background in electrical ampacity and wiring basics.

I did have to purchase an additional pigtail.(flex tubing with 3 #10 color coded wires, and 1/2 connectors on each end about 5 feet total length)

The heater had the wiring flex tubing direct from the wall to the top of the heater. The additional material was about 10.75 at the local hardware store.

I unhooked the wiring from the heater and wired it to the timer, then wired the new pigtail to where I had disconnected the original wires.

The timer has knockouts on the bottom for either 1/2 or 3/4 inch connectors so if it will accomodate either one. You most likely will have 1/2" connections.

Make sure you turn off the breaker before you start.

The entire process took about an hour total.

The instructions that come with the timer aren't that great, so if you don't know what you are doing, it won't help much.

The timer comes with 3 sets of on/off clips so you can time it on and off 3 times.

We set it aton at 5 am, off at 8 am, then on at 8 pm off at 10 pm.
So the timer is on 5 hours a day and off 19.

We figgure we will save around 25 dollars a month off the electric bill.

So... it will take at least 2 months to pay for the timer and other materials we bought. If you pay someone to install it, it will take much longer to pay for itself.

So far, it is working properly and so I am satisfied.
